Research into Age-related Macular Degeneration

Is There a Cure for Macular Degeneration?

© 2025 American Macular Degeneration Foundation

No, sadly, there is not yet a cure for macular degeneration. However, advancements in the understanding of the causes, and how age-related macular degeneration (AMD) progresses, have led to the identification of lifestyle habits and treatments that can more effectively slow the progression of AMD and preserve vision longer for many people.

Current treatments, especially for age-related macular degeneration, are slowing the progression of AMD and improving vision. Although there is not yet a cure for age-related macular degeneration, or Stargardt disease, research at leading institutions worldwide progresses steadily. Scientists have begun to understand underlying genetics, cell metabolism, and environmental factors that cause macular degeneration.

At The American Macular Degeneration Foundation, we fund advanced research into improved treatments and a cure, and provide free education to the public on lifestyle factors to empower people with AMD to optimize their chances for preserving vision for as long as possible.
