Software and Screen Readers
Screen Access
- ASAW - Automatic Screen Access for Windows - For DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows. Requires a hardware or software voices synthesizer. Announces screen command changes and allows user to use keyboard commands instead of a mouse.
Text Readers - Software used in conjunction with a scanner and sound card to convert printed text into digital information and then read aloud through a voice synthesizer.
- CiceroTM - Scanned text into speech.
- Kurzweil 1000 - Scanned text into speech.
- OpenBook - Through OCR (Optical Character Recognition) creates text that can also be edited as well as read aloud. Includes settings for magnification.
- SupernovaTM - Reads documents as well as Web pages, is multilingual and provides magnification.
- VisAbility - Scans and reads handwritten and printed materials, and magnifies up to 32 times.
- WYNN
- WYNN Wizard - Text can be edited as well as read aloud. Can read word-processing files, the Internet and text files.
- WYNN Reader - Same features as WYNN Wizard without the ability to edit text.
Screen Magnifiers
- inLarge - For Macintosh, magnifies to 16 times all or part of the screen, invert screen to white on black.
- LunarTM and Lunar Plus - Magnification, multilingual speech in Lunar Plus.
- MAGic - Magnification to 16 times. Speech option can be purchased.
Internet Access
- Connect Outloud - Designed for beginners or the experienced, Connect Outloud offers voice access to the Internet and for sending and receiving email. Now with support for Windows XP, Internet Explorer 5 and 6 and Adobe Acrobat Reader®. Includes speech synthesizer for seven languages.
- Home Page Reader - Uses IBM text to voice synthesizer, ViaVoice, to read Web pages. Handles a variety of elements such as tables, frames, image maps, columns and tables.
- ReadPlease - Reads Web pages and email aloud.
PDA - Portable Digital Assistant
- Voice Mate - With voice recognition, information such as phone numbers, addresses and appointments can be stored and retrieved.
Screen Readers - These are software programs that work with a speech synthesizer and the keyboard or in some cases, their own touch pad to read aloud things on a computer screen. Screen readers can read menus, icons, commands and text.
- HalTM - Using the Orpheus speech recognition system, HalTM can read menus, icons, documents and Web pages. For Windows.
- Jaws® for Windows - Provides access to software applications and the Internet, information, education and job-related applications.
- Window-EyesTM - Compatible with many versions of Windows, Window-Eyes offers stability in a screen reader. Also available in a DOS version, Vocal-Eyes.

Voice Recognition - Software that allows you to dictate to your computer without using the mouse or keyboard. It will initialize computer commands through voice as well as type your text.
- Dragon Naturally Speaking - Includes legal, medical, and public safety editions as well as standard to professional.
- ViaVoice - Available for Mac, PC and PDAs, IBM offers voice recognition software from beginner to expert, including translators for hand-held computer products.
