Any studies on the use of accupuncture for the 'treatment' of ARMD? Anyone had this done?
Did it help?

Hi Gary,
I have been working with a company who sell an Electro acupressure unit, aimed at treating Macular Degeneration. It uses the same energy points as acupuncture, but is non invassive to the patient!
Studies in the states have shown a 65% signifcant improvement in the condition when treated with this unit.
If you would like more information go to;
www.atlas.co.uk/dovehealth
Robert Redfern is a very knowledgeable guy, who is very dedicated to helping those with MD. He will be more than happy to tell you about the unit, and how it might help. It can also be used to treat many other conditions too!
Hope this is of help,
Your sincerely
Tanya Lucas

Dear Gary,
You can read about the research being conducted on Acupuncture Treatment in the Library on the MD Support web site, linked below.
On this same site you can access the Forum, a public message board. After you enter, look for past messages that talk about Acupuncture or Micro Stimulation. There are many discussions on this subject, as well as personal experiences. You can find this message board under the Community Directory. It is important to keep in mind that there has been no definitive scientific conclusions regarding this treatment, but who knows what the future will bring. I have included an article that was published recently on this very subject.
Good luck with your search, and please let me know if I can help you further.
Best regards,

Micro Acupuncture Treatments for Retinal Degeneration
By: Linda Kaspari (editor, FOCUS Newsletter at www.focusnewsletter.org)
Dr. Per Otte, a native of Denmark came to the United States in 1992, bringing with him a new approach and treatment for retinal degeneration. He envisions the day when micro acupuncture will be an accepted treatment for retinal degeneration by all ophthalmologists.
Micro acupuncture is based on an ancient 5,000 + year old Chinese procedure and was improved on in 1984, when Dr. Per Otte and fellow colleague Dr. Freddy Dane began their work in Denmark (their native country) discovering 48 new acupuncture points, not associated with any other acupuncture loci.
Dr. Per Otte states, "These points are substitutes for those in Chinese acupuncture, and are faster and less dangerous." Dr. Per Otte and colleague Dr. Dahlgren have researched and refined the newly discovered acupuncture points.
Dr. Per Otte is one of only three doctors worldwide conducting this newly developed treatment and feels there is potential for visual improvements (which medical doctors say is not possible) for retinal degeneration.
The staff at FOCUS has spent several months networking with patients who have recently undergone this treatment. There have been no negative reports to date and several members of the FOCUS staff as well as other retinal degeneration patients will be undergoing this treatment prior to the release of the October 1999 issue of FOCUS and will provide testimonials for FOCUS readers so everyone interested is able to make a more informed decision on this treatment.
Several patients have already obtained outside objective visual testing and we will update testimonials as we receive them.
Macular degeneration patients are reporting that their vision is brighter, clearer as well as improvements in depth perception and acuity.
RP patients are reporting improvements in clarity, acuity, depth perception and some reports of improved peripheral expansion.
Dr. Per Otte insists that patients first see an eye doctor for comprehensive evaluation before beginning treatments. The number of treatments depends on the specific problem and how long it has persisted.
The procedure consists of placing seven to nine ½" stainless steel needles in the palms and the hands and soles of the feet of each patient and is then removed after 20-30 minutes. "If there are no improvement within the first five treatments, then my treatments are not going to help" says Dr. Per Otte. If there is an improvement after five treatments, then the patient will continue to get better."
The price of each treatment is $50.00 per session and Dr. Per Otte claims improvements will last over a period of two years, however he does recommend follow up treatments depending on the progression of the disorder, between 6 months and one year. Please read patient testimonials as some patients report slight improvements while others report more substancial improvements.

I have been reading alot about this new method called Micro Acupuncture. I don't understand why it is only available on the internet. No one has ever heard of it, yet it seems it is so likely that it is successful. When I read Dr. Otte's Discussion with MD People, I was very surprised to see so many derogatory statements made by him in his responses to your questions.
It raised so many questions to me that I found it very hard to understand how anyone could answer them by themselves. He seems to know just what to say, and seems to think he knows exactly what he is talking about if he were talking to the average joe like you and me. But his professionalism leaves alot to be desired.
He states no one wants to evaluate or do a study because of his own confound conception that a study would entail a double blind and his refusal to adhere to this obviously demands control of the situation. He seems to need to let loose of the control and let everyone else who has the authority to doubt his Eastern Medicine ideas and take charge and really try to learn something about this success. He promises he is going to run seminars to try to teach the procedures. Next Spring has passed. Who is he going to teach?
His philosophies are not exactly what you or others may be interpreting them to be, at least that's how he seems to present himself. His western dialect seems to be very inconsistant. He obviously is not an MD or the like because he doesn't explain himself very well.
Therefore, objectively speaking, he must be getting his western medical lingo from somewhere else. He states on his website in the column written by Healthy Living Magazine, that "He envisions a day not too far away when trained microacupuncturists will work will work hand-in-hand with ophthalmologists. And Otte's European certifications earn him the right to practice in Arkansas, according to a spokesperson from the Arkansas Board of Acupuncture, who adds that he will most likely be granted a license by the state this year." How long ago was this written?
According to his Discussion with MD People in February 2001, the final conclusion states he is neither certified nor licensed by any board unless it has changed since then. In fact it states he even refused to default to the board for any inquiries or to return his license when asked to. How then does his European credentials award him the right to practice these treatment? What is he afraid of, may I ask?
